We Support Our Troopsbaghdad hc logo

The LISMS collects, distributes and ships hobby kits to hobbyists  on active duty overseas and vets in rehab hospitals. If you'd like to donate unused models to the cause, get in touch, bring them to our shows or drop them off at a monthly meeting! We'll add your items to these care packages along with any personal sentiments you opt to append.

We Support Our Kidslogo makentake

The LISMS runs kit building clinics that introduce children to the joys of scale modeling, made possible by the generous support of club members, IPMS USA and hobby vendors. Check our calendar and news pages for scheduling. If you're a distributor with surplus stock to contribute or an educational group, Scouting Organization or hobby shop interested in holding and hosting class, let us know!

We Aid Museums/Clubs/Shopshandshake

The LISMS cooperatively supports many museum events and has, at times, been extensively involved in exhibit development. We help IPMS and fellow IPMS chapters build public interest in scale modeling through sponsorship, participation in and joint promotion of hobby shows in our operating region. Recognizing that many benefits come from building good two-way relationships, we advertise for and strongly encourage patronage of hobby shops and manufacturers that partner with us.

Feature Article - LISMS.org Returns

laptoplogoWelcome to LISMS.org !

The basic credo of the Long Island Scale Model Society -- written in as a central tenet of our charter and mission statement -- calls for the active promotion of scale modeling in all forms (All while having fun, of course). To better fulfill this “job description”, extend our reach and spread word worldwide, we’ve re-fitted this web site to function as an on-line club adjunct.

Club Diary

logbookLogbook Entries

It's been a fun and busy couple of months around the club this last quarter. In summary :

  1. We're gearing up hard for NoreastCon 2012. Promo material, budgets and logistical planning is well underway. The launch of our new web site should help the process along. We managed to place a full, two-page spread in a recent edition of the IPMS Journal by way of advance publicity. Half-page ads will appear in the next two editions.
  2. The group is wearing new embroidered caps and polos bearing the club logo. We should all look pretty official at our next show.
  3. Members were treated to some very informative seminars by Bob DeMaio and Jim Boulukos in recent meetings. Thanks for the tips, gentlemen.
  4. The fall show circuit was another good one. Congrats to all LISMS award winners and hats off to the LIARS Club, Hudson Valley IPMS and Long Island Figure Society for organizing some great events. Give us a report if you have one.
  5. Some nice work was seen on the table at the quarterly contest meeting in January. Thanks to all who participated.

Hot Tips

hobby uA Dead Flat Finish

I heard club member Joe Yaeger ask how he could achieve flatter finishes than most standard commercial products typically provide. Here's a cheap recipe that might fit the bill.

Mix 1/3 white glue (Elmer's or equivalent) with 2/3 water and a drop of dishwashing detergent. Apply with an airbrush in light coats that dry quickly. Optional use of a hair dryer accelerates the process and lets you inspect the model for missed areas almost immediately. It also helps prevent puddling and ensure an even application. Continue spraying until satisified with the tone.

This method lays down a very dull finish that creates a well worn paint appearance. It carries the added benefit of being completely removable through simple soaking should you not be pleased with the overall results.
